Detailed Description

On July 16th, 1945 the first atomic bomb was detonated at the Trinity Site located 210 miles south of Los Alamos New Mexico on the plains of the Alamogordo Bombing Range known as the Jornado del Muerto. The blast was equivalent to 18,000 tons of TNT. It melted the surface sand near the tower where the blast occurred, turning it into a light olive-green glass-like substance. When it cooled it solidified again into a substance that scientists called "Trinitite".

In 1952 the site of the explosion was bulldozed over. It is now a National Historic Landmark district and in 1966 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 1952 it has been illegal to remove anything including Trinitite from the blast site. The Trinitite particles that we are selling are from a group of Trinitite collected by Dr. Pray before the site was bulldozed. It is authentic and can be verified by gamma spectroscopy.

The tiny particles that we sell are mostly smaller than the head of a straight pin and are supplied in a glass vial (just a few particles at the bottom - not a jar full. Study them under a microscope magnifier or one of the inexpensive digital microscopes that are popular now. The photo you see on our website was taken with a Canon G16 digital camera with a basic lens.
